REGISTERING WITH BMI
After adding the title, duration, work content, and language of your work, make sure to mark that “Yes,” the work includes samples. Here you can add the information on the title and writers of the original sample.
BMI calculates splits on a 200% scale, 100% writer’s share and 100% publisher’s share. If neither you nor your co-writers have a publisher, you only have to worry about registering the 100% writer’s share. However, if there are any publisher’s on the work, you will have to register the entire 200%.
Example: In this example, we assume you are using a 15 second sample of a Category C track, meaning that 10% is allotted to the original songwriters, and the remaining 90% is to be split between you and any co-writers on the new work.
Say you co-wrote the song with one co-writer and agreed to split the publishing evenly, and the two sample writers are due 10%. In this scenario, you are the only writer with a publisher. You would register the work as follows:
Sample Writer B Publishing, 5%
If no writers have a publisher, register the 100% writer’s share only.
